Shon's Take - Taco Tour Stop #61 - Casa Martinez - 204 W Greenway, Derby KS

Taco Tour Stop #61 - so, as you can imagine, we're constantly keeping our eyes open for more and more places to put on the list. Casa Martinez wasn't on our radar, but after a bunch of fiddle farting around with Thing 1 (Travis) who was doing some business down in Derby, we turned to Google to come up with a place near by and decided on Casa Martinez, near K-15 and Greenway.

Casa Martinez is located in a strip mall just off of K-15. The place isn't super fancy, but it is a sit down type of place. Chris was already there when I arrived and had chips with two salsas - mild and allegedly hot. I say "allegedly" because both sauces were pretty mild - if you're a wimp about the spicy, you won't have any problems here. They weren't bad, just didn't have any kick. Our waiter came over and took our order, which was a little confusing because they didn't have an a la carte price on the tacos. Basically, the taco plate is $11.50 for three tacos and they give you the rice and beans for free. That's their logic, not mine. Because as far as I was concerned, if you don't want rice or beans, you're having to pay $11.50 for 3 tacos, like it or not. Which really takes them down a notch on the value scale. So.... that said, I went ahead and took the rice and ordered the carnitas, steak, and al pastor tacos.

After a slightly longer wait than normal, we got our tacos. One of the pluses I did like was that we had sides of grilled onion, pico, guacamole, salsas, and lime which provided some nice options to have with the tacos. I went grilled onion, pico, and lime on all of mine and saved the guac for the chips (where it belongs). I started with the carnitas, which was filled with a good amount of marinated, tender pork. Overall, I thought this was a pretty good taco and would recommend this one for sure. Next up was the steak. I thought the flavor was good, but the meat was definitely chewier than what I was used to. Seemed like they may have skimped on the meat quality a little bit. Last was the Al Pastor. I'll be curious to see what Travis thought of this one - it was definitely on the peppery side, almost having more of a chorizo kind of seasoning to it. It was a little greasy, but as a chorizo fan, I actually liked that flavor.

Overall, I would say the tacos here were a decent find. Not sure that they were amazing enough to trek down to Derby unless I was already there. But if I'm in the area, I could see myself coming back as long as I can convince myself to pay almost $4.00 a taco. My overall rankings on the 5-Taco Scale are below.

Wichita Taco Fest - Fun Finds and Observations

So yeah.... we went to Taco Fest. You wouldn't know it by the lack of acknowledgement, buuuuutt yes. We made it. And it was glorious. Nothing but tacos, beer, and tequila everywhere. Pretty much a taco lover's dream. And while this may be a bit on the late side, I did take plenty of notes and wanted to get a few shout outs to some of the tasty finds that were on hand.

A couple of quick comments about the festival itself. I didn't make it last year, but according to just about everyone else who went, 2017's version was a total cluster. Long lines and vendors running out of food were just a couple of the most mentioned issues. This year was moved to Lawrence Dumont stadium, which provided a ton of room. All the vendors were told to bring enough food and from what we could tell, no one had to close up shop due to running out. So kudos to WTF (ha!) for their improvements there. It'll be interesting to see where they end up next year, with the alleged demo of LD Stadium. The only thing I might recommend if it's in a similar type setting next year is more shade and more misters. We lucked out with the weather this year, but that's not likely if it stays in June.

So on to tacos! First, let me say that we never got a full plate anywhere. We were on a "try as many DIFFERENT tacos as we possibly could" type of mission, so we only got one taco at each place. When it was all said and done, I had sampled a solid dozen tacos. Plus, there's an acknowledgement from me that slinging tacos out in the 90 degree heat, as fast as possible, away from your normal digs isn't exactly an ideal setting. (in that regard the food trucks on hand had a mental edge over the restaurants) So with these two things in mind, I'm just going to give a few shout outs to some of the tasty finds and let the rest be. I ain't got time to write something about 12 tacos. LOL

So let's start with the Taco Fest winners: Hot 2 Trot had one of the more unique tacos there and won the title of Co-Champion (Taco Fest's judges, not my opinion) with their hot dog taco. Travis said he had it the year before and wasn't interested in trying it again. I gave it a go though and thought it was... interesting? Different? The slaw on top was pretty decent, but the taco I had only had a few slivers of hot dog. No one else was in line when I went, so take that for what it's worth. But my guess is, these guys probably serve up a pretty decent dog. The other Co-Champ was Tacos Beto, which was serving up a pretty tasty Al Pastor. All the tacos were a dollar each, which made for some skimpy tacos on occasion. But Beto handed out a nice tasty Al Pastor, with plenty of meat for a buck. We'll need to find them again for sure.

My personal favorite was the Asian taco from Kamayan Food Truck - pulled pork with lemongrass, jalapeno, and lime cabbage. Taste EXPLOSION! A nice mix of spicy and lime that was perfect together. Highly recommended. One of our other faves was the offering from Kolace's, which is the new kolace restaurant at 13th and Tyler - ground beef in a tasty baked dough that reminded me of a taco bierock. BTW, I've been there for their standard breakfast kolaces - do yourself a favor and go get some. We both also enjoyed Mamacita's Golden Taquitos - rolled fried pork taquito with sour cream and green salsa. Yum! And of course we both hit up some of our personal faves from El Dorado Al Carbon and Pollo Express. Still two of the best taco joints in town.

So there you have it. I'm already looking forward to next year's Taco Fest! Tell us if you have any other tasty taco recommendations that you found!

Travis - Taco Tour stop #60 - Pedro's Express - 602 N Tyler

Well, we ARE trying to get back in the swing of things - this time of year is busy and sometimes it's hard to get into a routine. Oh and hey, sometimes we like to swing back by places we've been - so that might be why we get a little quiet sometimes too!  Anyway, if you remember the old Charlie's Pizza Taco place on Central & Tyler, well it's now Pedro's Express and we decided to see what they were like!

The place looks like a fairly typical fast food taco joint - you order at the counter, take a seat and they bring the food out to you.  It's clean and well decorated and the staff seems friendly enough.  They have a fair selection of tacos so I ordered carne asada, carnitas, and al pastor street tacos.  I also decided to try the chicken and a ground beef (both on hard shells).

The tacos came out in an acceptable time and the first thing I noticed was big chunks of meat on all of the street tacos and a pretty hefty serving on the hard shell tacos too.

I started with the hard shell ground beef and the shell was VERY crunchy.  So crunchy in fact, that the taco basically imploded.  However I still thought it had a good taste and it was hot (temp).  There was plenty of meat with adequate seasoning - but it's definitely a mess.  In spite of the mess, I probably would get this again.

The chicken was next also on the hard shell and once again, the shell disintegrates in your hands when you start taking bites out of it.  Lots of meat again, big chunks in fact.  The taste was pretty decent - nothing special but really wasn't too bad.  It also was nice and hot temp (not spice).

Moving on to the more traditional tacos, I went for the carne asada.  Once again it had big chunks of meat. I was hoping it would have a nice steak flavor, but I felt like it was lacking.  It wasn't bad, but it just lacked that steaky flavor I was hoping for.  The meat was a little chewy too.  I did try a piece of meat by itself and it really wasn't too bad - but the flavor does get lost in the taco - even in spite of the amount of meat and the big chunks.

The carnitas were next and probably my least favorite of the stop.  The meat was dry and a bit crunchy.  Again, plenty of big chunks of meat, but lacking good flavor and being a little overdone kind of put this one out for me - I wouldn't bother again. Meh.

Last was the al pastor and it was very juicy with lots of marinade in the taco running out.  Lots of meat and it had a little kick to it.  Definitely a good flavor in my opinion and the meat was tender.  Out of the traditional tacos, this was probably my favorite.

Overall, I wasn't disappointed by Pedro's - however I didn't really have anything that would just make me come running back.  However the location for me is convenient, so I may keep them in mind if I find myself near to work and want something different than my usual stops.  With the amount of meat, I wasn't disappointed in the value either - so I think this is worth checking out. I don't think you'll come away blown away, but you might find something worth coming back for occasionally.  For me, it's still probably a place I'd put squarely in the middle - just slightly above average.

Shon's Take - Taco Tour Stop #60 - Pedro's Express - Central and Tyler

There's a few constants in life here in good ol' Wichita KS: Kellogg will always be under construction. The weather's almost always too hot or too cold. And restaurants come and go faster than we can keep track of. In the wake of the closing of Charlie's Pizza Taco, a new traditional Mexican joint opened in it's former space at Central and Tyler, giving us an opportunity to eat tacos closer to work at Taco Tour Stop #60 - Pedro's Express.

Pedro's just opened up within the last few weeks, serving up typical Mexican fare in a quick counter style set up. Apparently the owner was familiar with the recipes at Lalo's Express and got the okay to open another place using their recipes, but under a slightly different name. They kept most of the same interior from Charlie's so it felt familiar, but still pretty nice compared to a lot of the hole in the wall places we end up at. The menu featured a nice array of meats - all of the usual suspects, as well as fish, lengua, and some others I'm not remembering. Anyway, I walked up to the counter and decided to go with 4 tacos: Al Pastor, Asada, Chicken, and fried fish.

After a reasonably brief wait, we got our tacos and they looked pretty good. Pedro's didn't skimp on the meat as every taco was stuffed full. The chicken came on a separate plate and in a hard shell - more Tex-Mex style with the lettuce, cheese, tomato. The chicken came in nice big chunks, which I actually kinda liked. Good flavor on this one and probably one of the better chicken tacos around. The fried fish was next - two planks of fried fish, with a tartar sauce and lettuce and tomato. As far as fish tacos go, I'd say this one was average. Not bad at all, and I'd certainly get it again. But nothing about it that wowed me. The steak taco was more of a traditional street taco on soft tortillas with cilantro, onion, and tomato. I thought the steak had a pretty good flavor and again, no shortage of meat here. This one went really well with the hot sauce, but could've stood just fine on it's own. Last was the Al Pastor, which was also on a soft shell with onion, cilantro, and tomato. The meat was tender and plenty of it. It had a lighter peppery flavor to it, but not as bold as some other Al Pastor's. Still another decent taco with no real complaints.

Overall, I would say I'm pretty glad to have found a new place close to the office. I can definitely see myself returning back here to get some more tacos and try out the rest of the menu. Tacos were reasonably priced (between 1.85-2.25 each). But no chips and salsa, so a little down on the value meter compared to other places. Still, if you're looking for a good place out west, I think you'll find that Pedro's is a tasty stop. My overall rankings on the 5-Taco scale are below.

Shon's Take - Taco Tour Stop #59 - Paleteria La Reyna - 2925 N Arkansas

Ok, so..... it's been a while since I've gotten around to writing any reviews. I've eaten plenty of tacos, just haven't written about any, mainly because life and traveling and chaos have gotten in the way. But now that things have settled, it's time to get back to TACOS!!

Stop #59: we FINALLY get into a spot that we've been wanting to try for a couple of months now at Paleteria La Reyna. We went once last year and found out the place was closed on Wednesdays. Which required some adjusting since Wednesdays is our designated taco tour day. Then we tried to go again a few months ago and they were shut down for vacation. Third time's the charm though as Travis and I were finally able to meet there for lunch. Chris was doing unspeakable things and will probably never go and review it if his pattern holds to form.

Anyway, the place is a stand alone building on north Arkansas with plenty of parking and several cars already in the lot when we got there. They seemed to be doing a decent business and it smelled pretty good, so the first impression was definitely positive. You basically order and pick up at the counter. They had a nice selection of tacos including some saucy options that we don't always see around town. So I decided to go with 4 tacos: chicken, pork verde, al pastor, and carne asada. We were handed some chips and salsa and picked out a table. The salsa was pretty good - a decent kick, but not overpowering and I really liked the chips which were nice and thick and perfect for scooping.

Our tacos came out after a reasonably short wait and looked pretty good. Standard dress with the onion and cilantro, lime and radish on the side. I started with the chicken and it was a reasonably good chicken taco. Had a fair amount of fried (as opposed to marinated) chicken which was tender and lightly seasoned. Considering the number of sloppy mushy marinated chicken tacos I've had, this one was actually a pleasantly tasty entry. The pork verde was next, which was basically pork cooked in a spicy green sauce. The sauce had a nice spicy kick to it, so if you're a bit of a sissy on the spice scale, you might want to skip this one. The sauce kinda drowned out the pork flavors, but overall I still enjoyed this taco quite a bit. Al pastor was next - nice rich coloring to it and a decent flavor to match. Can't go wrong with the al pastor here either. Last was the carne asada. It was filled with a decent amount of tender steak. Didn't seem to have the flavor pop of the first three, but still an above average taco with a good meaty flavor.

Overall, I would say we were pretty pleased to find this place, even if it did take us a couple tries to finally make it work. Plus at $2.25/taco they were fairly priced, though not the cheapest. Still the value was good and I'm looking forward to going again and trying some of the other tacos on the menu. My overall ratings on the 5 Taco Scale are below.

Travis - Taco Tour stop #59 - Paleteria La Reyna - 2925 N Arkansas

Holy Cow - yes I'm slipping on my reviews...it seems like it's been forever.  A few weeks ago Shon and I finally made it up to Paleteria La Reyna to try their tacos.  This is a location that has kind of eluded us somehow. We seem to always go on days they're closed or when they're away on vacation.  But we finally did make an appearance - so how was it?

This is a fairly standard "order-at-the-counter" restaurant.  They have a selection of tacos and looks pretty plain inside but plenty of seating.  The chips and salsa were pretty tasty - nice thick and crunchy chips so definitely enjoyed those!

When our food arrived, my selection had green salsa on everything but Shon's didn't. We don't really know why because we ordered at the same time and nearly the same items.  Regardless, that green sauce has a bit of a bite, so if you're not into spicy, you'll probably want to ask them to hold it.

I started with a barbacoa taco - it definitely wasn't as fatty as others we've had. I liked the texture better here than some that we've had that feel kind of mushy.  The taste was decent but not as good as some of the better ones we've had.  It was still an enjoyable taco though, so you won't go wrong here if you like barbacoa.

I tried the pollo next - it was tender and a little juicy on the outside but still a little dry on the inside. It had a pretty good flavor but the green sauce sort of covered up the chicken taste. That was a bit of a bummer but I still did like this taco.

Carne asada was next and it had a good steak flavor that I enjoyed. The meat was pretty tender except for one small fatty bit that was in it - but nothing to get too upset about.  There was plenty of meat making this an enjoyable taco for sure.

Lastly was the al pastor which had a very red color like you might expect to see. It had a nice flavor with plenty of meat. I really did like this taco - and it had a bit of heat to it.  It was marinated well and definitely wasn't dry.  I'll for sure get this taco again if we make our way back here.

Overall our visit was good and I'm glad we finally made it here.  They seem to be closed on Wednesdays, so plan your visit accordingly (that was our problem - lack of planning).  I can't remember the cost, but it wasn't excessive - so you'll be fine on value.  They do seem to have a selection of other Mexican fare so it might be fun to stop again and try some other stuff!  My taco ratings below may seem a bit boring, but I think PLR lands pretty well in the above average category. Nothing crazy to rush over for, but you won't be disappointed if you make the stop - so I'm going 3 tacos straight across!

Shon's Take - Taco Tour Stop #58 - El Vaquero - 1320 E Central

Stop #58 took us to a part of town we're not in very often for tacos. Mainly because there just aren't many places around there to get decent quality tacos. After trying the week before and finding it closed (allegedly, according to Chris who got there first), Travis called ahead to make sure they were open. Once we got the green light from Thing 2, we made our way to E. Central to give this new place a try.

If you read the paper (I know, I know, what's a newspaper, right?!?!) you may have already heard about El Vaquero, which got a write up when they first opened as they're one of the few (maybe the only) place in town that has a live mariachi band. Unfortunately, the band doesn't play over lunch, but I was still excited to try a place closer to the east side of town. When we got there the place was D-E-A-D, although a few more people would show up over the course of our lunch. The waitress told us to come on Tuesdays for $1.00 tacos and it would be extremely busy. Anyway, we started with some chips and salsa and they were pretty tasty which was good because it seemed to take a while for our tacos to get there. Anyway, after I looked over the menu I went with 5 street tacos @ $2.25 apiece - steak, chorizo, chicken, al pastor, and carnitas.

So after they finally killed and butchered the animals, shipped it in from western Kansas, passed the inspection, and threw it on the grill for about 20 minutes we did FINALLY get our tacos and they looked pretty good. Standard taco dress - cilantro and onion, lime on the side. I started with the steak taco aaaannnndd it was cold. Lukewarm at best. So now, we know why it took so long as it appears our tacos were probably sitting on the counter forever. Which was unacceptable given the lack of customers. Anyway, it was too bad because I thought the steak was actually pretty decent. Plenty of tender meat. Just not "hot and fresh off the grill". Next up was the chorizo. I really enjoyed this taco quite a bit and thankfully it was warmer than the steak. It was a little spicier than most other chorizo tacos I've had on tour but without that burnt nickel taste that often comes with it. Thumbs up for this one. Next up was the chicken - and once again, I just CAN NOT find a high quality pollo street taco anywhere. I caught a piece of tendon or not-quite-cooked piece of the chicken toward the end which soured my overall impression for this taco. But before that, it was still just an average taco - not horrible, but definitely better with a little salsa on it. Same for the carnitas - not bad. Plenty of decent meat, but really needed the salsa to provide it any real flavor. Last was the Al Pastor annnndddd YES! A very tasty taco. I enjoyed this one a lot, even though it too, was lukewarm at best. This one had some added pineapple to it which I found to be a really nice complement with the spicy meat. I threw a little salsa on the last couple of bites just to try, but it really didn't need any. The best of the bunch by far, the sweet vs spicy was a nice way to finish.

In summary, I'd say this place was a pretty mixed bag. Most places, the tacos are in the same category (awesome, average, etc) MOST of the time. But I feel like I had some pretty good tacos (pastor, chorizo) and some fairly middlin' ones. I'm thinking I'd like to come back and maybe give them one more try on $1 Taco Tuesdays - maybe a fresh, warm batch might improve my perceptions. My overall ratings on the 5 Taco scale are below.
